The Presence of Female Writers in the IMDB Top 250 Films:
- Only 33 films have some kind of female presence in terms of writing and/or story.
- 8 of the films are based on novels written by women but adapted and directed by men.
- 3 of the films are based on stories written by women but adapted and directed by men
- Only 17 films have a legitimate female screenwriting presence.
- Of those 17 films, 13 are co writing credits (alongside male writers)
- The Lord of The Rings trilogy is responsible for 3 of those co writing credits with all the films having been adapted by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens (and Peter Jackson).
- Rebecca (1940) is the only film on the list that is based on a novel written by a woman with a screenplay also co-written by a woman.
- Only 2 titles in the entire list have a screenplay solely written by a woman, The Shining (1980) and Shutter Island (2010).
- The Lion King (1994) has the largest female writing presence of all the titles on the list with a total of 6 women (2 screenwriters, 1 story supervisor, 1 story contributor and 2 additional story material contributors). However, it’s worth mentioning that the total number of credited writers/story contributors on this film is 29.
Precisely why I’m wanting to go into the film industry so badly. We need more of a female presence in cinema.
